What can I do about age discrimination at my work?

Question Details:

I am a caregiver and in my sixty's; I'vebeen doing this work for 30 plus years. But lately I been hearing smart remarks about my age. I am either to old and should retire and let someone younger have my job. I have been with the same client 19 months and I use to get 32-36 hours per week, now they are bringing in someone younger and cutting my hours to 22 hours per week. Is there anything that I can do? I feel it's not going to be long before they take me out. Maybe they think that cutting my hours will force me to find work some place else.

Age discrimination is illegal  in employment. That refers to both "bottom line" discrimination, such as being paid less or receiving fewer hours, as well as to enduring harassment owing to your age. You could contact the Department of Labor to file a complaint. Note that if you are having difficult doing some aspect of your job, that might present a different situation; e.g. if you need to be able to pick up the patient you are caring for and are now having difficulty. However, as  long as you can do the job, you may not be discriminated against.
