Can we break a verbal contract?

Question Details:

We just started a one-year contract for cable, internet and phone service. We are very unhappy with the service, it is nothing like they said it would be and we would like to cancel. We just have a verbal agreement as they do not do paper contracts. Is it possible to get out of the contract?

Generally, I would say that you can get out of a verbal contract although in some circumstances a verbal contract is legal. But when you say they don't do paper contracts, did you apply for this service online? If you did, there is probably some agreement that applies to you. Did you receive anything in writing or does your bill say anything? You need to carefully read these items because they frequently bind you to a contract. Also, watch out for the cable service to insist that you pay some kind of early termination fee.
