Can you start up a business while receiving unemployment compensation?
Question Details:
I am currently receiving unemployment benefits and want to start my own home based business if I can get the funding. When am I legally obligated to stop receiving benefits? I do not want to break any laws. Am I even allowed to pursue that avenue of employment?
You'll need to talk to your local unemployment office about this: they will be able to give you accurate information, and any forms that you might need.
Typically, you have to report your actual earnings from any work you have, including self-employment, while you're collecting unemployment insurance benefits. You also, usually, have to demonstrate an active job search in some way, and that might be a bigger problem for you, although you might get a break considering the economy.
