I have a court date coming up for tresspassing and can't afford a lawyer, what should I do?
Question Details:
I was brought to an abandoned building for a photoshoot with a photographer and model, Iwas the makeup artist. someone called the police and we were very cooperative, the policeman was very nice, but he informed us the owner wanted to press charges against anyone found in the building as a week before, someone tried to set it on fire. we weren't vandalizing anything, just taking pictures. The photographer has a lawyer but the model and I can't afford one. How should we plead (guilty or no contest)? I understand the owner wanting to press charges but I still feel we weren't doing anything wrong.
This is a criminal offense and you can be left with a criminal record. You really should have an attorney represent you on this. If you qualify, one may be appointed for you by the court (assuming that the charge carries potential jail time). Additionally, you can see if you qualify for Legal Aid or see if they can recommend someone to help you. Also, check if there is a law school nearby to where you live; they typically run free/low cost clinics that handle these type cases. Finally, you can contact the local Bar Association in your county; they may have a list of attorneys who will take your case "pro bono" (for free) or at least for a reduced fee based on your income/circumstances.
In the meantime, if you don't have an attorney by the time you have to appear in court plead "not guilty". Then get a lawyer ASAP.
