There is a proposed covenant change to restrict parking of cars on the street and boats/campers/trailers in the driveway. Can they do this?

Question Details: Current covenants restrict non-working vehicles but we can park an RV in the driveway that runs. Can a covenant change take away a right that we had when we moved in? I heard the covenant to restrict renting your home failed. Someone told me it failed because it took away a right a homeowner had before and that covenant changes can't take away your rights. It needed to be in the original covenants.

I am a lawyer in CT and practice in this area of the law.  Laws/covenants may be altered as long as they are done within the letter of the law and are validly agreed on and executed.  In this case, the covenants/rules appear to change a lot.  However, you may not have a lot of room here, especially if these matters are being voted on.  These covenants may be changed and the one that you refer to here is not unusual.  I suggest that you onbtain the documents that approved the covenant change and show it to a  lawyer to determine if the proper rules were followed.
