Question Details: We just found out my wife is pregnant. She has been covered under a group health insurance through work for the past 24+ consecutive months (and still is). Her insurance covers maternity care, but very poorly. I have better insurance through my job, which she is eligible for as my spouse. Since she is protected by HIPAA because of her coverage, can I add her to my insurance to help pay for her maternity or is there some loophole or rule that can exclude her care since she's already pregnant? Also, can my insurance block her from enrollment if they find out she's pregnant first?
Many insurance companies have an exclusion for pre-existing conditions, but that typically does not apply to group insurance provided through one's employer. If your spouse is added to your policy and the insurance company does not ask about pre-existing conditions, you're home free. I would place your wife on your policy without dropping the other one just yet. See how they handle the first few claims with regard to the pregnancy. If there's no trouble at all, you'll have your answer.
