I recieved judgement default and I am clueless on what to do.

Question Details:

I live in Kentucky and I am on SSI. I received a default judgment yesterday and I don't understand the state exemptions. I do have a home I am paying on and I also own my car. Not sure what they are worth but I am worried to death I am going to lose everything. I owe $7,019.25, plus $729.25 in interest. I don't think I will be able to pay with my small income; I also have 2 small boys to raise.  What should I do? What happens next?

I am a lawyer in CT and practice in this area of the law.  If you can contact these collection companies you may be able to work out a payment plan. a default judgment means that you failed to appear for the case and as such the court is giving the creditor the benefit of the doubt that the money is owed and you are responsible for payment.  you may  open the judgment file filing a motion to open the case and then buy  yourself some time to talk to the creditor to try to get on some sort of payment plan you can afford.  if you cannot afford a payment plan, then you may want to think about bankruptcy to discharge the debt.  if you do not, the bank may be able to come after your house and place a lien on it so that when you sell it the crediwill be paid.  I suggest that you talk to a lawyer to see if he can help negotiate a deal with these creditors
