out of state supposed felony.
Question Details:
My son is 23. He lives in Pa. While on a job in GA he was arrested for tampering with an elevator. It got stuck and he waas kicking the door.He got locked up for 2 days till his boss posted 1300 bond. Now he is laid off and got papers saying he has to return for arraignment in 10 days He has no money.A lawyer from Georgia said for 1500 he will get the whole thing dropped. If he doesn't go back at all what can they do.If they issue a warrant will Pa arrest him and send him to Georgia?
If your son fails to appear in court, a bench warrant for his arrest will be issued. The authorities may or may not (probably not) pursue him for this. However, if he is stopped for even a minor traffic infraction this could all turn up. He would then be taken into custody and face sentencing for his failure to appear as well as the original charge.
Additionally, his criminal record will have an effect on any future employment; a background check will show this.
He really needs to take care of the situation. An attorney maybe able to get him into some type of "diversion" program (or Georgia's equivalent) which will enable him to later clear his record. I know $1,500 might seem like a lot of money now but considering the consequences, it would be foolish not to clear this whole thing up ASAP.
Note: He can see if he qualifies for representation by the Public Defender or Legal Aid. Also, he can contact the local Bar Association in the county where he is to appear; they may have a list of attorneys who will take his case "pro bono" (for free) or at least for a reduced fee based on his income/circumstances.

Are you a lawyer?
