Insurance company says they can't close our claim until I give them access to my credit information

Question Details:

Our boat was stolen and the insurance company says that they can't move forward with our claim unless I give them the authority to access my credit and financial history. The adjuster said that she needs to verify all of the information that I have provided to her regarding credit cards and other information. I've spoken with a few people and they say that I don't have to give them access to my credit. Are they operating in bad faith?

It appears they may be seeking reasons to deny your claim.  In other words, if you owe a lot on credit cards, suddenly in debt and then all of a sudden your boat disappears.  However, they may be operating in bad faith because absent circumstances that would cause them suspicion, your credit information should have nothing to do with your insurance claim.

You can choose to file a complaint against Progressive with your state's dept of insurance regulation or hire a lawyer on your own to fight the insurance company.  Be careful though because most insurance policies will not pay for your lawyer's services even if you win.
