I am a lawyer in CT and practice in this area of the law.  you do not need to hire a lawyer.  however, claimants such as your self may be able to get more money from the accident by having a lawyer, than without one.  You need to know at the very least, whether you have any permenant damages.  you will need to treat with a doctor and continue to treat until the doctor says you have reached maximum medical improvement and lets you know what if any permenant damages you have. these types of claims can take up to 2 years to settle.  if you do not want to wait that long and rather put as much money in your pocket, then file the claim with the insurance company and treat with your primary care doctor.  i would estimate that your case is worth 3-7K.   i strongly suggest that you meet with a lawyer if you are truly injured.  if you think that you will be fine within  a month, demand 5K and be done.  make sure that you file suit against he driver within 2 years of the date of the accident if your case has not settled by then as it will be extinguished if you do not and you will be barred from any recovery.
