Oregon Railway - Criminal trespassing

Question Details: My son and 2 friends were walking on railroad R.O.W. in Oregon to see a spot that one of them used to hike to as a kid. All were given a ticket for Criminal Trespassing, Class A Misdemeanor, $7500 Fine. None of them have any kind of record. Can't they just tell the court what they did and get a reasonable fine and be scolded not to do it again. Maybe some public service time. This fine and charge is ridiculous.

This is a question for an Oregon lawyer.  However, it is typical that a summons will list the maximum possible fine that can be imposed - it likely does not mean that if convicted he will get that large of a fine. Also, there are plea bargain possibilites that woudl result in no criminal record as a result of this eventually. I strongly encourage yoru son to hire a lawyer in the Oregon town whre the court is that he has to appear in.
