Is a church responsible for my lost items?

Question Details:

I left some of my belongings inside a church were I coach. I was the last person to leave that night so I locked up. Upon my return the next day my items were missing. I checked the lost and found boxes in the church and nothing was found and I believe that my items were stolen. I will file a complaint to a police officer later today. My question is, do I have grounds to take the church to small claims court for negligence if proven that a teacher saw the items and placed them in lost and found on the church's property? She is a teacher at the school there.

Probably not, unless the church said somewhere or somehow that they took responsibility for others' belongings. If not, then they are not guaranteeing or warrantying their safety, and the church is not responsible if someone else happened to take personal belongings left there. Certainly, if you believe that an individual person stole them and have some evidence, you might be able to sue that person, but the church itself is not like a self-storage warehouse; it does not guarantee safety of personal belongings.
