Need to know about adoption laws in the state of Illinois.

Question Details: Hello, my husband and I are both 29 years of age, and we have been married 9 years. We know a young lady who is pregnant with her 3rd child and she wants to just give us the child. I know it does not work that way. I am wondering what the steps are for us, how costly it will be, and if my being on Social Security due to anxiety disorder will affect us being able to give this child a loving home in any way? This woman is on Medicaid so her doctor bills are being paid, will we have to reimburse the state of Illinois? Please help me. We long for a child. Thank you very much.

I'm not an Illinois lawyer, but my research suggests that the process is fairly typical.  You should find a local attorney who does adoptions, as soon as possible, so that you'll be ready when the child is born.

It looks like there isn't a problem with the direct placement.  However, you'll have a very short deadline after birth to file papers, which will make the baby a ward of the court, living in your home under the supervision of the Department of Children and Family Services.  The birth mother will have to sign a written document giving up her parental rights, and you'll have to try to get the same from the birth father.

This is absolutely not something you should think about as a do-it-yourself lawyering project.  I'm an adoptive parent, and I didn't represent myself in this, either.  I wish you the best of luck!
