Question: Personal Injury - Illinois

Asked on 11/6/2009

I think that my 13-year-old son's hockey coach committed assault on my son during a hockey game

Coach was verbally assaulting kids on ice,. He became very angry at my son regarding a play. When he returned to bench coach got angry at my son because he said he "pissed him off" when he got back in line when he wasn't done yelling at him. He proceeded to grab, pull and then push my sign toward the locker room in a very aggressive manner and told my son to go to the locker room. is this assault? Called local police andofficer on phone said to me it was definitely assault but officer I met with said it's coach's right; he was coaching?

Absolutely not -- not if your son is a very young minor and it has nothing to do with coaching.  Was your son injured? Did he have physical bruises? If not, it may be harder to prove criminal assault/battery but there is also the process through civil court to determine (burden of proof is lower) if the coach is liable for any physical damage/injury to your son and also mental suffering. Keep in mind, oftentimes coaches do have more reason to have physical contact with their students but it doesn't mean that very aggressive pushing that is beyond simple coaching should be tolerated.
