Can the court compel a father to pay child support for a college student?

Question Details:

I would like my son's father to continue to pay child support after my son turns is 18, if he attends college. Is there any legal basis because I know he will not voluntarily?

I'm afraid not.  Florida is one of several states that does not have either a statute or a binding judicial decision that requires child support for college students;  the support obligation ends, at the latest, at high school graduation or age 18, whichever is later.

This is one area in which the law differs widely from one state to another;  some states go so far as to require a parent to contribute to a child graduate or professional school education, where the parent has the ability to pay.
