What if you disagree with a school dress code?

Question Details:

My son is 6 and in kindergarten and was just suspended for having a little mohawk. Now in the policy it says nothing about a mohawk but in the dress code it does. the school says that he can not return until his head is shaved. I believe that it is my sons right to have it and to have an education. He has had this hair cut since the beginning of school.

As cute and cool as you may think the mohawk is, the school has the right to make policies about dress code and hairstyles.  I agree that this is a stupid policy and that kids should be able to dress and wear their hair anyway they want.  However, from the schools perspective they want to look and appear to have a certain formal decorum that is abided by to show a level of respect tothe institution.  While this is only kindergarden, not Harvard, the school has the right to set its own policies.  If the parents rather have their kids attend another school, they are able to do so.  The policy does not violate the state constitution or the federal constitution, so you are likely to lose a battle in court.  I suggest that your son complies with the rules or send him to a different school.
