My social security and info was stolen, what do I do next?

Question Details:

Recently a private laptop was stolen from a college professor's office. On the laptop was hundreds of student's social security numbers and other information who were enrolled in her classes from 2004 to 2006. I am one of those students and I am not sure what action to take. The only thing the school has done is say if you were an unlucky one then you may be at risk. What actions should I take from here?

Here is a great resource for identity theft information from the Federal Trade Commission: http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/microsites/idtheft/. If you suspect that your social security number and other private information has been compromised, you should monitor your financial accounts and bank statements every month. Be alert for any suspicious activity on those accounts and report it immediately. You should also check your credit report frequently. Remember that you are entitled to one free credit report every 12 months from the 3 major credit reporting agencies.

Certain signs to look for indicating possible identity theft include:

  • fraudulent or inaccurate information on your credit reports;
  • not receiving your bills in the mail;
  • getting phone calls and letters from debt collectors or businesses regarding merchandise or services you didn't buy.
