My sister died in another state and we are not sure what to do?
Question Details:
My sister died in N.Y. and we do not know of any life insurance policy. She has an apartment that is paid for. What bills of hers woulld have to pay?
Her estate should go to probate in the county where she lived. I can help as I practice in both Fla and NY.

You don't need to pay any of her bills, other than ones you voluntarily assumed obligations for, such as by cosigning a lease or guaranteeing loans. Certain bills may come out of her estate; that is, if she has any money or property which will pass by a will or by intestate succession (inheritance without a will; typically to close family, though the exact rules vary by state), some bills may be paid first before the remainder of the estate is distributed. However, worst case, that will use of the estate; other family members will not be responsible.
