What are an executor's duties?

My dad passed away last month. He was debt free with no assets other than $10,000. That was held for him by the nursing home where he lived. As I am the executor of his Will is there anything I need to do besides divide his remaining assets between my sister and myself?
I am so sorry for your loss. If the assets of the estate are that small you should look in to probating under the Small Estate rules in Maine. Every state has a proceeding that is simplified for small estates and it will be much less cumbersome and costly than a full out Probate. The Will will need to be presented as well. Once you are appointed as the fiduciary of the estate (the executor) you can divide the asets between you and your sister (you say that there are no debts which would normally be paid first) and then file the necessary state tax documents. There may be very little in the way of tax documents but double check. Good luck to you.
