If my name is "Robbie" can my employer go by "Rob"?
Question Details: The owner has decided that I should change my name to Rob. I have told him several times that my name is Robbie. But he says that it looks more professional to be called Rob. He has changed my name on all correspondence, business cards, etc. Is this legal?
It's completely legal: an employer could tell an employee that, for business purposes, he will go by any name the employer wants--and if the employee refuses, the employer could demote, reduce pay, terminate, etc. Employers may set terms and conditions for employment, even silly, annoying, presumptuous, or insulting ones.
