Does verbal abuse warrant police action?

Question Details:

My husband of 11 years gets angry at me sometimes because of our different opinions. Then he shouts, curses, blames me and calls me names (stupid, villager, dumb, asshole, etc). He usually does it at night when kids are in bed. It's just two of us. He goes on for a very long time until he gets everything out of his chest. He is not a drinker; he is not physically abusive. He has a very good high paying job with the highest level of clearance. Can I call the police on verbal abuser? He will deny everything. Would it hurt his job position?

Colorado has a very, very strong law against domestic violence that defines the offense, in part as "any other crime" committed under certain circumstances that would include your case, and your husband's verbal abuse probably fits within the definition of harassment.

If you call the police, someone will be arrested, almost certainly your husband, and he will then be ordered to stay out of the house and leave you alone.  You will not have the ability to drop the charges, because they will be filed by the police.  Your husband will not be allowed to have guns.

I don't know enough about your husband's job or security clearance to guess what the effects might be, but I think it's a very, very serious concern.
