Can an adopted parent sue for reimbursement for items of necessity that a legal guardian should provide?

Question Details:

My girlfriend's grandmother adopted my girlfriend when she was three. Her grandmother has kept the receipts on countless things, even such things as Christmas gifts that she spent on her. Her grandmother is threatening to sue her for the things that a legal guardian should provide, such as food and clothing. She kept mainly receipts on such things like food, clothing, shampoo/body care products, and Christmas gifts. Can she take her to court once she reaches 18 if my girlfriend refuses to pay her?

There is no cause of action to collect money damages for items that were given as a gift with no expectation of repayment.  in this case, the grandmother chose to give your gfriend all these things based on her decision to take responsibility for her as a guardian.  as you correctly point out, these items you describe for which the grandma seeks payment for are the types of things that are usually paid by a guardian.  even more basic, your gfriend's grandma cannot collect money unless your gfriend accepted responsibility to repy her grandmother for the items.  i highly doubt that thers is any document or otherwise that suggests that your gfriend agreed to repay her grandma for the items.  i suggest that your gfriend do nothing and not pay a dime.
