Question Details: My friend received an inheritance from her grandfather. It is currently in an acct in her name only and she plans on putting most of it in CD's (again, in her name only). Can creditors take this money from her to pay for her husbands credit card debt? His credit cards are in his name only and most of it was accrued before they were married.
As long as the accounts are not in her name she should be protected (and obviously as long as her assets are kept solely in her name). However, to the extent that they have other joint debt, a house for example, they might be at risk.
