Hi. I am a Missouri attorney that handles personal injury claims and disputes arising with insurance companies. A few additional details would be needed in order to determine if any potential options exist here to prevent the medical providers from coming after you personally for the incurred expenses. What type of medical condition did your daughter have? Was there a specific cause of the injury or illness she suffered? Was your ex's insurance through his place of employment? Do you have medical insurance personally? In addition, do you know how long the policy had been ineffective for? Finally, what insurance company was your ex's policy through?
Answers to these questions will assist in providing a more accurate evaluation of your situation and an assessment of whether there are any potential avenues of recourse that would allow you to obtain reimbursement for the cost of the medical expenses. I may be reached by e-mail at mth2000@yahoo.com. Weekends and evenings are perfectly acceptable. Thank you.

I am not admitted in Missouri. You and your ex need to get a lawyer to help you fight this. There are notice requirements for terminating insurance coverage and there is a certain degree of latitude for lapsed premiums. Although he may be responsible for the insurance you as parents are ultimately responsible for the child's care an the medical providers will go after you both. You may have to in turn sue your ex.
I would also call your state insurance department for help here. Good luck.
