A minor cannot settle an injury claim without court approval. A guardian must first be appointed.

If this is a lawsuit or a settlement from an insurance company, the court or the company will let you know how they want to handle the claim.  They may require that you be appointed guardian and that they write the check to you as guardian.  They may require that you set up a guardianship account to deposit the money in to it.  They will not write the check to a minor no matter what.  Someone has to be appointed to receive it.
