I let my brother put his utility bills in my name and he did not pay the bill, what should I do?

Question Details:

My brother could not afford to turn on power in his name because he already owed money to the power company. I did him a favor and put the bill in my name. I was unaware that he did not pay some recent bills, now I owe $700. I was living in the house for a period of time, and had moved out prior to receiving the news of this bill. He let me and my baby daughter stay there rent free for a period of time, and when I got a job I payed him a weekly rent in an amount that he thought was fair. I cannot afford a $700 bill that he did not feel like paying. What should I do? How should I handle this?

You should contact the power company and explain the situation. Even if the company insists that you must pay the bill, try and make arrangements to pay the bill in installments that you can afford. It is important that you clear this up or else you may find it difficult to turn on the power in another residence under your name or you may have to pay a substantial deposit.
