my boyfriend was on his way to work, when he passed a school bus, while it was closingthe stop sign. He has to go to court and then attend a trial.

Trial sounds like traffic court. He will get a fine, most likely unless he can convince the judge to lower the fine or lessen it. Was it his first such traffic ticket? Unfortunately, this is one of those traffic violations that is taken quite seriously in court.
