My 39 year old son collapsed and later died at the hospital. Am I legally responsible for his medical bills?
Question Details: My 39 year old son collapsed and later died at the hospital. He was never married and never had any children. He did not have a will and he has no savings or property. He was unemployed at the time. He lived at the same residence as I do, and bills for the emergency room, doctor, etc. have been arriving. The bills are solely in his name. Am I legally responsible for these bills? Do I need to contact the senders or collectors with any information? Should I do nothing with them at all?
Unless you agreed to pay, his estate is responsible. If he has none, so advise the creditors.
You are not liable for his debts unless you agreed to be liable in writing. You should notify the creditors of his death and that there is no estate.
