If your son is at fault in an auto accident, you would be liable as the registered owner of the vehicle.  To protect yourself from potential liability, it would be advisable to put the car in your son's name so that he is the registered owner.  The Department of Motor Vehicles in your state should have the appropriate form(s) for a change of registered owner of a vehicle.
