Must I give the son of my deceased husband a copy of my husband's Will?
Question Details: My husband died last month. One of his sons called recently to ask if his father had left him anything. I explained that his father's Will stipulates that I am the executrix and that everything was left to me. He inquired about tangible goods, physical property and money. I read a few selected words to him from the Will in explanation. He requested that I tell him if there is anything for him in the future (assuming that I sell something). The following morning he called again and asked for a copy of the Will. When I asked why he wanted it, he said that he wanted to read it.
A Will is a public document, and should be filed in the court. You are the custodian and executrix, and you are best advised to consult counsel to ensure that you are acting in accordance with the laws of your state. There could be serious consequences for you if you don't file the Will with the court. In the meantime, I would be as transparent as possible with your step-son and send him a copy as requested.
