Question: Auto Accidents - Washington

Asked on 11/2/2009

Motorcycle accident liability settlement offer made but no injuries. Why is insurer offering this?

My girlfiend  and I were on my motorcycle; going 5-10 mile per hour. I made a right hand turn from a stop, my back tire fish tails (wet white crosswalk striping), then bites. My GF and I were sent toward the curb;we hit and fell over. My insurance interviews us; pride hurt more than anything else; a few bruises;$2k to bike with parts/labor/helmet. They offer her $700 during phone interview even after both of say nothing is really wrong with us physically. I have $50k pp limit. I get that they want to settle to cap the exposure, but some how it does not feel ethical to us given we we are only bruised. Should she (we) take it?

If she truly has only bruises, it's not a bad deal - but read the release very carefully before you sign.  The insurance company is probably trying to limit liability for a minor payout, before one of both of starts to show symptoms of worse injuries - which sometimes take a while to surface.
