Medicare for a person with limited to no income to cover emergency surgury

Question Details: My fiancee, 24 went to emergency room complaining of sharp abdominal pains after diagnosis she was told had her appendix ruptured and had to remove it right away. She then explained to the surgeon and nurse that she was a full time student with no health insurance being supported by a mother with 5 kids and low income, but she was told she could apply for an emergency medicare to cover the surgery. After the surgery she was referred to an agency that assist people apply for medicare but now she is being told her medicare will only cover future hospital visits and not the surgery. please advice

Do you mean "Medicaid"?  If so, some states will apply Medicaid benefits retroactively.  If a caseworker is telling her that they can't be so applied, then ask to speak with a supervisor; in my experience many times caseworkers don't know all of the policies relating to exactly what is and is not covered.  Additionally, some hospitals have "free bed funds" to cover such emergencies; call the administrator and ask.
