Marriage voided?

Question Details:

A friend of mine got married to a woman because she said she would pay his license fines of over $200,000. They lived together for 6 months. He was drunk when they married at justice of peace. Can his marriage be annulled? If not, since he is currently unemployed, can he obtain a way to get a divorce for free?

Even if the marriage could be annulled on the grounds of his intoxication, which is doubtful, that sort of grounds usually has to have the annulment case started within 30 days after the marriage.  After six months of living together, the only way he could get an annulment at this point would be if the marriage were absolutely void, because of an existing marriage of either of them, or something equally drastic.

If the woman has a large income or assets, it's probably in her interest to get the divorce done.  And if she has money and won't do it, it's possible she'll either give him the money for a lawyer, or that he might be able to find a lawyer who will take the case for whatever he can get the court to order her to pay him.
