What can I do if there is illegal activity going on in my apartment complex?

Question Details:

I've complained to my landlord about regularly smelling marijuana smoke in my apartment. He said that neighborhood kids were sneaking into the laundry room and smoking. Our apartment is 2 floors above the laundry room. He said that he alerted the Super to keep an eye out and that was basically all that he could do. I don't buy this. As a rent paying tenant, I don't feel like I should have to deal with this especially since this issue can affect my mental and physical health. What can I do to resolve this issue?

You could move to a new apartment. But if you want to remain there, you could find out if your city offers a Landlord/Tenant Dispute Mediation service. Many cities around the country offer these services to  resolve disputes between landlords and tenants. Also, you could contact law enforcement to find out what the landlord's legal obligations are since the landlord knows that there is the smoking of marijuana (and perhaps other illegal activities) occurring on his property. Perhaps the police will have some suggestions for stopping that activity so that you don't have to endure the smoke in your apartment.
