If a VP/Manager states in an email that my company has a severance policy, can the company later so there is no such policy?

Question Details:

A vice president of a division in my company sent an email to me stating that my company has a severance policy of 1 week pay for every year of completed service with the company. I have been with the company for 13 years. I have now been laid off since they could not find a position for me within the company. The VP, 2 weeks after I was laid off, has now left the company. The new VP/manager now states there is no such policy. Can I still make a claim to get severance pay ?

I am a lawyer in CT and practice in this area of the law.   Severance pay is not a right guaranteed by statute.  therefore you may have a tough time trying to demand that the company pay you when you were fired or let go after the policy at the company no longer existed.  i suggest that you hire a lawyer to seek severance and determine what the policies were and whether the company is trying to avoid paying you.  This happens all the time and companies rather avoid litigation and pay you, than fight publically.  speak with a lawyer and pring him all policy books and so forth that were in place.  most lawyers will meet with you the first time for free.
