Is there a time limit on collection of medical bills?

Question Details: I received notice from a collections agency May 2008 advising that I owe over $1000 in medical bills from 2000. I called and was given a fax number to submit a written request to recieve a copy of the bill. I requested that they show me where the hospital billed medicaid and that this was the amount I owed after. I never received anything nor did I recieve any further correspondence. Now a different collections company has mailed me a bill in October 2009. I reside in the state of Florida.

I am a lawyer in CT and practice in this area of the law.  Thre statute of limitations governing contract applies to the medical services.  therefore, the medical providers have 6 years from the date that the services were rendered to file a lawsuit and preserve their collection rights.  if you think that the time limit has expired, i would ignore the calls and then file a motion to dismiss if a lawsuit is filed.  you should hire a lawyer to help if you are sued.
