Is there a limit as to how far back you an be invoiced for prior service?
Question Details: My dentist had an issue with her billing software and has not sent me a bill for the last 6 years, until last week. This invoice covered all of the services that we not billed. What am I responsible for? Is there some sort of limit on how far back she can go to recoup those amounts? It is not the money that is bothering me so much as this was her mistake and now she is looking for me to make her whole. I don’t even have the same insurance company the entire time and have no way to research the accuracy of her invoice.
Legally or ethically? Legally, you are off the hook for any debt which is past the statute of limitations.
Ethically, I think you received the services, and should work out a means to pay it. Clearly you shouldn't have expected to receive dental work for free, and it was dumb for your dentist to wait as long as she did. But you DID receive the services, and should have followed up earlier.
