Is not carrying your motor vehicle insurance card a misdemeanor?
Question Details:
Is not carrying your motor vehicle insurance card a misdemeanor in Connecticut? I was stopped for a moving violation by a police officer. I have valid insurance on my car but the officer told me that it was a misdemeanor not to carry my insurance. Furthermore, she said that I was "lucky" because she could put me in handcuffs and haul me off to jail all because I did not have motor vehicle insurance card. The police officer was belligerent and acted hostile. I was calm, polite and respectful throughout the entire ordeal. Should I file a complaint against the officer? I am an attorney.
It's not a misdemeanor, it's a motor vehicle violation. The worst case scenario would be that you would get a ticket for driving without insurance and your car would be impounded until you produce the proof of insurance, and the charge would then be reduced to failure to have the proof of insurance in the car.
The police officer was unprofessional. Whether or not you file a complaint with her department is up to you; you aren't going to obtain any direct benefit from that other than satisfaction.

Are you a lawyer?
