Is wife responsible for husband's medical bills?

Question Details:

My mother and her husband are each in separate nursing homes. They both have dementia. Each month money it taken from my mom's pension to pay for her husband's medical insurance and she is reimbursed. He's on Medicaid. I wonder whether paying this ins and getting reimbursed each month is worth the hassle. I am told: "if medical bills are not covered by medicaid or insurance then your mother, as his spouse would be held responsible". Is this true? There are no other assets. His 401K was depleted (hence the medicaid) and her 401K will be gone soon, as it's paying for her nursing home.

This is correct. A husband and wife are typically responsible for each others' contracts, especially when the contracts are for "necessaries," such as nursing home care under these conditions.  As long as she is actually getting the full reimbursement of what's taken, based on the medicaid payment, you haven't lost anything, but I'm not sure why your mother's husband needs to still have medical insurance, if he's on Medicaid, so you might want to look into that.
