Although I do not practice law in the State of Arizona, here are my initial impressions.  It is difficult to ascertain exactly what transpired given the facts that you have provided.  However, as a general rule there is nothing wrong with a cop asking a question and an individual providing an incriminating answer.  Regardless, if someone has a misdemeanor charge pending, it is a good idea for that person to consult with and/or hire an attorney to discuss the facts in greater detail and develop a strategy to defend the charge.  Good luck.
