Is it my right to get a copy of my time card?

I am a cosmetology student and requested a copy of my time card for my records from the owner. She refused. I suggested transferring all the info on a piece of paper and asked her to initial it acknowledging the info is accurate, she refused. I'm requesting a copy because when students get close to graduating, if their time cards have hours missing or the time card disappears the hours and operations for that period are lost. Seeing as graduating is based on completing 1600 hours and the operations I feel it is my right to get a copy of my time card.
I would absolutely agree with you that you are entitled to see you time card and have a copy of it for your records. But here is the possible obstacle I can see put in your way: if the time card is considered part of your employment file, some states do not allow access to same. But you are in luck. California law requires that employers allow employees and former employees access to their personnel files and records that relate to the employee’s performance or to any grievance concerning the employee. Labor Code Section 1198.5 Inspections must be allowed at reasonable times and intervals. To facilitate the inspection, employers must do one of the following: (1) keep a copy of each employee’s personnel records at the place where the employee reports to work, (2) make the personnel records available at the place where the employee reports to work within a reasonable amount of time following the employee’s request, or (3) permit the employee to inspect the records at the location where they are stored with no loss of compensation to the employee.
So ask again. The problem you do not want to run in to is her destroying any of your records so that you have to start from square one. Keep your own records as well from here on in. And consider filing a complaint with the state agency that licenses her. Good luck.
