Is it legal for a company to cancel my insurance one month and twenty five days after i made a claim

Question Details: I had insurance through my employer and quit in may. I had an acident and had to have surgery in july and checked to see if i was covered through that insurance. the hosital told me that i was on each visit after the initial acident. When i called to make sure that i was still covered before my last appointment my insurance company told me that my insurance was canceled starting july first but was not called in until august 25th. how can that be legal?

Technically, you should probably have been dropped on June 1, unless you were still technically on the payroll then, in which case July 1 was proper.  This was (I assume) a typical sort of health insurance plan, and once you were no longer working for the company, you were no longer eligible for coverage, beginning the first of the month following your last day.  However, you should have been given the option to purchase the insurance (at a higher rate) for yourself under COBRA.  You should ask your company to put you on COBRA since they failed to give you proper notice;  if they won't do it, see a local attorney immediately.
