Is a mechanic liable if paid to inspect a car for purchase but failed to find a defect?

Question Details:

I paid a mechanic to inspect a used car which I purchased with his OK. Now a few days later, I find the engine has a crack and needs replacement. I am having the mechanic come back to take a look at the car. What accountability does the mechanic have in this situation?
