Question Details: my girlfriend is 18 years old and away at college and mostly independent from her parents, however her dad has software on her computer that monitors everything she does online including every web site she looks at in detail and both sides every conversation she has on instant messenger and such. while she is aware that this program is monitoring her computer, she does not want it there and did not consent to having it installed after she turned 18. also i recently sent a package to her via a friend but her dad stopped him and took the package from him. what can i do about this?

Although I do not practice law in the State of New York, here are my initial impressions.  Unless your girlfriend wants to see her father arrested, I suggest that she take a common-sense approach.  With respect to her computer, she should have a computer technician remove the monitoring software.  This should be as simple as bringing her computer to the geek squad at bestbuy.  With respect to the package, I do not understand how her father intercepted the package that was sent "via a friend."  The friend can simply refuse to hand the package over to her father.  In any event, however, to avoid this problem altogether, simply mail the package directly to her at college.
