In this day and age are there still Will readings?
Question Details: Do you have to have a lawyer, get everyone together and sit down and read a will once someone passes away?
No, generally speaking, you do not. Once a person passes away then the proposed executor will file a Probate Petition in to Probate Court (called Surrogate's Court in New York) and send notice (generally a Citation) and a copy of the Will to the named beneficiaries and the beneficiaries that would have been named should the decedent have died intestate (without a Will). Good luck.
