In a criminal trial may the defense have access to police reports and/or the notes they made during their investigation?

Yes, in Michigan this information is called "Discovery". Discovery contains police reports, witness statements, witness lists, certain medical reports, forensic reports, etc. Often times a criminal defense attorney will request this information at the beginning of a criminal case for preparation. Be sure to request your Discovery from the prosecutor or have your attorney do so.
