If you keep a deceased parents social security checks for a few months until they stop, What will happen?

Question Details:

If there are other siblings, how will they prove which family members took the funds, and who will be responsible to pay it back? The funeral home said they would report it, so we did not (the surviving siblings of our father). They have direct deposited 4 checks since his death, and we have kept the money.

Well, that is fraudulent unfortunatelly.  Those monies if given prior to the decedent's death should be going to the estate to divide as the estate should be divided (will, trust, probate, intestate).

If they were generated after the parent's death, it is fraud and theft to keep the checks and cash them.  So, if the funeral director didn't contact the authorities, you should.
