If there is no lease or rental agreement who is liable for cleaning the property after the tenant leaves?
Question Details:
We had no lease or rental agreement. We cleaned the property and steamed the carpets when we left, but the landlord says that we didn't. My husband went to property for a walk through after we left, but she never showed up, and now she wants us to come back even though she didn't show up the first time. We told her that my husband could come back on his next day off, which is several days away, but she won't take that as an answer. She has been calling incessantly and even went to my husband's workplace and threatened to call his boss if we didn't comply.
With no written lease, the landlord would be responsible for ordinary end-of-tenancy cleaning--steaming carpets, for example; cleaning appliances, generally washing or waxing, etc. The tenants would be responsble for doing or paying for extraordinary cleaning--for example, paying to repaint with children drew on walls, paying to clean or replace carpets if there weere pet urine or red wine stains, etc.
