I am not admitted in Illinois.  Generally, if you hired the lawyer you can fire the lawyer.  You will, however, be bound by your retainer agreement.  Your new lawyer will have to figure out a fee arrangement between she/he and the other lawyer in order to take over the case as most attorneys will not give up their file without a lien placed for the work they have done.

You should go and interview new attorneys to take over your case before you fire the old one.  If you feel the old attorney is not providing adequate counsel then not getting a new attorney can hurt you more than you know.
