If I borrowed money from a co-worker, can my employer legally make me sign a letter documenting this in order to keep my job?
Question Details:
I borrowed money from 2 co-workers as they offered when my fiance lost his job. My employer got wind of it, and now says if I do not sign a commitment showing how much I owe and when I will pay them back, I will loose my job.
It all depends on your state. As a general rule, if you are an employee at will, you can be fired for any reason. At the same time, if you place in the document I am signing this letter because the employer said I would lose my job if I did not", you MIGHT save your job and argue duress should the co-workers sue you for breach of contract. Without having this documentation the employer can lie about his threats.
